I have a special affinity for corvids, specifically crows and ravens. I have formed a sort of friendship with a family of crows that live in my neighborhood—this handmade book is inspired by them.
Inspired buy vintage children book covers and pulp detective novels, I used the recognizable silhouette of the crow to create the composition, and the white smoke to highlight and frame the title. I used Vollkorn for the typeface because it reminds me of a 1930s old book cover title.
I've been studying my neighborhood crows since March of 2013, when I randomly heard a crow cawing outside of my house. I tossed out a piece of slightly stale bread, and the crow came to inspect it, and eventually flew away with it. About 30 minutes later, I heard him again, this time perched on the fence in my backyard. I continued to periodically give him snacks. Soon he brought his mate. In early May, they introduced me to their new fledgling. They continue to visit regularly to see if I have left them any snacks. They follow me and my husband when we walk our dog, sometimes doing low fly-bys, or suddenly showing up out of seemingly nowhere, and 'chirping' to let us know of their presence.
For this image, I used a couple of photos that I have taken of my neighborhood crows, simplifying the shapes to almost abstract.
First I sketched out some crow images, using photos I took and online sources. Then I created thumbnails for the book. I used Photoshop and Illustrator to create my images, and laid out the pages in InDesign.
